Killdeer Birds
Hello everyone, today, I am sharing one of my favorite birds and I encourage you to keep an eye out for them.
Killdeer birds
I am getting the information on killdeers birds from the American Bird Conservation these birds stick to being on the ground, they nest in pastures, lawns, fields, roof tops, parking lots and they also love gravel. These birds are not endangered because their population is one million, but I thought I should share with you anyway.
Threats
According to the American Bird Conservation, these birds are threatened by: pesticides, mowing equipment, cars, etc. When feeling threatened, these birds put on a broken wing display to lure predator away from the nest.
Diet
According to the American Bird Conservation, The Killdeer feeds on invertebrates such as earthworms, beetles, grasshoppers, and snails, sometimes adding seeds and small vertebrates to its diet.
What you can do to help
Keep an eye out for them and what you do if you find a nest:
1. Steer clear of the nest
2. I make a 1 inch tall, three sided, open top, wooden box, to put around the nest to protect it.
You can make one too! Use a drill to screw the screws into the wood pieces. Make sure that you leave one side open so they can get in comfortably. Stay far away after you put on the box. If the nest is on a slope put the solid side facing up the slope. Be sure to avoid the nest because if the nest keeps being bothered the adults will abandon the nest.
3. Don't spray pesticides anywhere near the killdeer nest.
4. If the nest is in your drive way, drive your car around the nest
5. If you are on your mower and see a killdeer nest avoid the nest by at least 6 feet. Make sure you face the blower the other direction.
I encourage you to check out the American Bird conservation.
Thanks for reading!
What's your favorite bird?
